Boston went on lockdown Friday with all mass transit, universities and retail outlets closed and residents ordered to stay inside. Heavily armed SWAT, tactical and bomb squad teams on the ground in Watertown and Cambridge asked media to put their cameras down as they pursued Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
With Thursday’s late-night manhunt for remaining Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev extending into Friday afternoon, and wall-to-wall coverage blanketing the big four broadcasters and cable news, networks have already solidified plans to incorporate more news coverage into primetime.

Extended coverage starts early on ABC, with Diane Sawyer anchoring a one-hour episode of ABC World News. Sawyer has already been on ABC live throughout the morning, reporting on the Boston events from New York with Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos. A special live edition of 20/20, anchored from Boston by Elizabeth Vargas, will air at 10 p.m. Later in the evening, Nightline will also be live from Boston with Juju Chang reporting.
After its own hourlong Evening News outing at 6:30 p.m., CBS is breaking into primetime at 9 p.m. with more live coverage from Boston. CBS News Special Report: Boston Bombers, an hourlong broadcast, will also be anchored by Scott Pelley.
STORY: Boston Bombing: All 3 Nets Stay Live on Manhunt
Brian Williams, who’s helming NBC News’ live coverage of the Boston events throughout Friday, will dedicate the entire hour broadcast of Rock Center to Boston. The live coverage at 10 p.m. will include reporting from Harry Smith, Natalie Morales and others.
The Boston coverage means that NBC’s previously scheduled Ann Curry segment will air at a later date. The former Today co-host recently taped a sit-down with Jackie and Warren Hance, the parents of the girl killed in the devastating 2009 car wreck on New York’s Taconic State Parkway.
Fox, which does not have a news bureau, has no planned changes to its primetime lineup — but affiliates always have the option to preempt programming with local news or a special Fox News feed.
