Boston Online Film Critics Name ‘Snowpiercer’ Best Picture

The Boston Online Film Critics Association has selected an unconventional choice for the best picture of 2014.

The critics group named Snowpiercer as the top film of the year on Saturday, with Birdman director Alejandro G. Inarritu honored as the year’s best director. Last year, the group chose 12 Years a Slave as the best film, which went on to win the Oscar for best picture.

Snowpiercer, directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho and Tilda Swinton, grossed $4.5 million domestically during its theatrical run earlier this year.

Best actor honors from the online critics went to Brendan Gleeson for Calvary, while Marion Cotillard was chosen as best actress for Two Days, One Night.

Other honorees included Birdman‘s Edward Norton for supporting actor, Snowpiercer‘s Swinton for supporting actress and Calvary‘s John Michael McDonagh for best screenplay.

Life Itself, about film critic Roger Ebert, won for best documentary, and The Lego Movie took the prize for best animated film.
