COLOGNE, Germany – Jan-Ole Gerster‘s laconic comedy Oh Boy, Katrin Gebbe‘s psychological drama Nothing Bad Can Happen, Lars-Gunnar Lotz‘ prison thriller Shifting the Blame, Georg Maas‘ German reunification drama Two Lives and Stephan Lacant‘s Free Fall, the story of a straight policeman who falls in love with another man, are among the nine films picked for Germany’s foreign-language Oscar shortlist.
The list also includes Marc Rothemund‘s dramedy The Girl With Nine Wigs; children’s animation feature Knight Rusty from director Thomas Bodenstein; Michaela Kezele‘s My Beautiful Country and Jeanine Meerapfel‘s The German Friend.

An independent jury will pick one film from the list to represent Germany for next year’s foreign-language Oscars. Germany’s last Oscar nomination was for Michael Haneke‘s The White Ribbon in 2009. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck‘s The Lives of Others was the last German film to win the best foreign-language Oscar, back in 2006.
Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 16. The winners of the 86th Academy Awards will be announced March 2.
