After presenting his debut collection at New York Fashion Week this past September, power stylist Brandon Maxwell told us that he’s “always loved that black, blush and white classic, timeless American woman.” The elegant offerings of soft colors and clean lines were inspired by “Gwyneth Paltrow in pink at the Oscars. It’s that sort of feel.”

Paltrow definitely got the memo — the Oscar winner rocked a cream frock with exaggerated sleeves from the collection in October. Maxwell, a Texas native, certainly has established himself on the red carpet, with Uma Thurman and Kristen Wiig also stepping out in his looks as of late. Not to mention client Lady Gaga, whom Maxwell refers to as a “Brandon Maxwell woman, through and through,” has worn both spring 2016 looks and custom Brandon Maxwell pieces on multiple occasions. Below, Maxwell breaks down his five favorite pieces from his collection.
X Back Jumpsuit
“This is the first piece we worked on for the collection. I wanted to start with something that I thought was aspirational, and at $1,200 retail, [it] is still attainable. It’s simple and easy to wear. I love the peplum detail that covers the hips, hits the woman in all the right places.”

Strapless Gown
“I really tried to think about simple timeless pieces a woman can wear to any event time and time again. I didn’t want to make gowns that are one-hit wonders and then you can never wear them again. I love the curved detail coming off the bust that gives the illusion of a smaller waist. I feel like any woman can wear this style and look amazing.”

High-Collar Trench
“As I was creating this trench, I thought about what the woman would wear the morning after to dash to the store. I love the high collar that hides her face a bit and makes her look composed and elegant. It’s like wearing a piece of armor. If I was a woman, this is the jacket I would wear to the grocery store at 9 a.m.”

Wave Minidress
“I imagine our woman going to a concert in this dress. I made it for the girl who wants to go out and have fun and feel confident. While it’s short and has a plunging neckline, the long sleeves make it more refined. It’s just easy and sexy.”

Cape Jacket
“I was very focused on suiting for this collection and love this version of the blazer. I think it’s modern and playful. It definitely isn’t for everyone, but I know there is a girl out there looking for a new take on the traditional blazer.”
