Walt Disney Studios’ Brave is the disc that keeps on selling.
In its third week of release, the Disney/Pixar animated feature remains in the top spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined. The film was released a week before Black Friday, debuting at No. 1, and then held onto the top spot amid the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy.
Last week, Brave held onto the top spot despite the release of a formidable competitor, Sony Pictures’ Men In Black 3, which bowed at No. 2 – although the third installment in the sci-fi franchise did wrest the No. 1 spot away from Brave on Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc chart (and, in all fairness, was released on a Friday so it wasn’t available the entire tracking period). According to Nielsen data Men in Black 3 was a heavy Blu-ray favorite, generating 59 percent of total unit sales from the high-def format – as opposed to just 47 percent for Brave.
Universal Studios had another great week, with Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax continuing to enchant holiday shoppers. The film bounced back up to No. 2 on the overall home video sales chart thanks to massive Black Friday retail promotions – and on this week’s chart, which tracks sales through Dec. 2, The Lorax experienced only a slight drop, to No. 3, in its 17th week in stores.
Universal also scored big with ParaNorman, an animated feature that grossed $55.9 million in U.S. theaters but debuted at No. 4 on the First Alert sales chart – and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.
Looking back a week, final Black Friday numbers from Nielsen indicated Blu-ray Disc experienced its best-ever week in terms of unit sales and second-best week in revenue (surpassed only by Christmas week last year).
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week ending Dec. 2, Men in Black 3 debuted at No. 1, bumping Lionsgate’s The Expendables 2 to No. 2. Anchor Bay’s Lawless debuted at No. 3.
On the First Alert sales chart, The Expendables finished the week at No. 5 while Lawless bowed at No. 6. On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, the titles came in at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
