Judd Apatow is pushing the boundaries of some of his writer friends, engaging them in acting roles for his latest directorial production.
Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote Bridesmaids with Kristen Wiig, and former Saturday Night Live writer Robert Smigel have landed roles in Judd Apatow’s untitled comedy at Universal.
For Mumolo, the move reteams her with her Bridesmaids producer and also reunites her with the comedy’s breakout actress, Melissa McCarthy, who THR previously revealed has joined the production, formerly known as This is Forty.
The untitled comedy, currently shooting, stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann as their married characters from Apatow’s Knocked Up in a new story by the writer-director-producer.
Albert Brooks, Megan Fox and Ryan Lee are also among the cast.
Mumolo, repped by UTA and Thruline Entertainment, and Smigel, repped by CAA, will play a couple who are best friends with Rudd and Mann.
Mumolo co-wrote, produced and briefly appeared in Bridesmaids, which has grossed about $208 million worldwide. She recently closed a blind script deal with ABC Studios and, with Bridesmaids costar McCarthy, recently sold a feature comedy pitch to Paramount with Lorne Michaels and John Goldwyn attached to produce.
Smigel co-wrote You Don’t Mess with the Zohan with Apatow and Adam Sandler. He is also the creator of Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog and SNL‘s cartoon segments including The Ambiguously Gay Duo.
