Good news for the multitude of fans that couldn’t score a ticket to Springsteen on Broadway — the sold-out show has now tacked on an additional four months.
After generating wild acclaim and unprecedented demand at the Walter Kerr Theatre, where the show opened Oct. 12, it was announced Monday that Bruce Springsteen will return after a hiatus of just over three weeks and continue his Broadway engagement from Feb. 28-June 30.
The intimate mix of memoir and music has been the strongest seller of the Broadway season, with its average ticket price of $500 outpacing that of Hamilton. The production has been grossing close to $2.4 million a week with just five performances in a venue with seating capacity of only 950. Cumulative box office currently stands at $18.6 million.
The production set up a Ticketmaster Verified Fan program in a bid to curb scalpers from buying up large blocks of tickets for the resale market. Due to the overwhelming demand and large numbers of fans who were unable to secure tickets for the initial part of run, which is scheduled to end Feb. 3, there will be no additional registration for the four-month extension, giving a fresh shot to those who previously registered but were unsuccessful at obtaining tickets.
A digital lottery also will continue through the additional months, operating from Dec.19 at luckyseat.com.
Unconfirmed rumors have been circulating since the show opened that Springsteen is in line to receive a special Tony Award at the annual Broadway honors next June. The production’s extension now means the Boss will remain on stage throughout the busy awards season, making that honor all the more likely.
