The right song can make or break a scene. But in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the choice in music goes beyond choosing the right track or composition. Music is written into the fabric of the entire The Lord of the Rings epic—literally. Tolkien penned lyrics for dozens of songs, from funeral dirges to joyful tavern-drinking ditties to tunes hummed by Hobbits on their meandering strolls. For Tolkien, Middle-earth was a world full of music.
The team behind The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power stayed true to those origins. This video tells the behind-the-scenes story of several songs featured throughout the show, including “This Wandering Day,” a Harfoot migration tune sung by Poppy Proudfellow (Megan Richards), and the Dwarven Princess Disa’s (Sophia Nomvete) choral plea to her mountain home to release trapped miners. Each song is given the attention and care often reserved for major recording artists or orchestras, highlighting the fact that the show’s music is much more than just background noise. It’s front and center.
