TORONTO – Canadian broadcaster Bell Media has ordered a local version of The Amazing Race after acquiring the format rights from Disney-ABC Domestic Television.
Bell Media’s CTV has aired all 21 seasons of CBS’ stateside version of the international TV franchise.
The Canadian network is now looking to The Amazing Race Canada to give it a homegrown summer reality series starting in 2013, after So You Think You Can Dance Canada and Canadian Idol filled that role in earlier years.
“Canadians deserve their own summer version, distinct from what is seen in fall and winter. With the incredible diversity, scope, beauty, and sheer land mass that Canada has to offer,” Phil King, president of CTV programming and sports, said of the deal for The Amazing Race Canada.
Indie Insight Productions will produce the series in Canada, backed by Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri’s Profiles Television.
The Amazing Race Canada will be the 12th international version to launch outside of the United States, after local series in Asia, Brazil, China, France, Latin America and Vietnam.
