Former Canadian radio host Jian Ghomeshi has been arrested on four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcoming resistance, or choking.
The Toronto Police Service Sex Crimes unit on Wednesday said Ghomeshi surrendered to police. He made a noon appearance in Toronto at the College Park courthouse, with the CBC News website indicating Ghomeshi stood in the prisoner’s box wearing a white shirt and black blazer.
Ghomeshi was eventually released on $100,000 bail and must remain in Canada. The charges follow Toronto police launching an investigation into Ghomeshi after nine women came forward to Canadian media outlets with allegations of sexual assault and sexual abuse.
Ghomeshi was fired by the CBC on Oct. 26 amid a media storm after he presented evidence to the pubcaster, thought to be texts, emails and videos, to prove he had engaged in aggressive sexual relations with consenting partners. CBC execs thought otherwise, concluded they had seen “graphic evidence” of physical harm done to an unidentified woman, and dismissed Ghomeshi.
The CBC has cooperated with the police investigation. A spokesman for the pubcaster declined to address Ghomeshi’s arrest, telling The Hollywood Reporter that the CBC never comments on “police investigations or matters before the court.”
One of Ghomeshi’s accusers, Trailer Park Boys star Lucy DeCoutere, agreed to be interviewed by Toronto police investigators as she alleged in media interviews that Ghomeshi had slapped and choked her on a date.
Other accusers have come forward with similar allegations of unwanted beatings on dates with the former radio host. Ghomeshi has withdrawn a $55 million lawsuit over his dismissal against the CBC, and hired a top Toronto lawyer, Marie Henein, to defend him against criminal charges.
