Michael De Luca, the twice Oscar-nominated Hollywood power-producer, will receive the Hollywood Producer Award at the 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The first awards show of the 2013 Oscar season, owned by affiliates of THR parent company Guggenheim Partners, the ceremony will be held on Oct. 21 at the Beverly Hilton.
The Hollywood Producer Award is presented annually “to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry.” De Luca certainly fits that bill. His producing credits over the years have included The Social Network (2010) and Moneyball (2011), for which he earned his Oscar noms, as well as The Mask (1994), Boogie Nights (1997), Wag the Dog (1997), American History X (1998), Pleasantville (1998), Magnolia (1999), Blow (2001) and I Am Sam (2001). At the age of 27, he became president and COO at New Line, and later served as head of production at DreamWorks before forming his independent development and production company, Michael De Luca Productions, which has a first-look deal with Sony, in 2004.
Most recently, the 48-year-old, along with Scott Rudin and Dana Brunetti, produced Paul Greengrass‘ highly-anticipated drama Captain Phillips — which will open the New York Film Festival on Sept. 27 and which Sony will release nationwide on Oct. 11.
Previous recipients of the Hollywood Producers Award include Mel Gibson, Mike Medavoy, Ryan Kavanaugh, Christian Colson and Danny Boyle, Letty Aronson and, last year, Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
The Hollywood Film Awards are determined by founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu and an advisory committee. Last month, the Hollywood Film Awards and Dick Clark Productions, which also produced the Golden Globe Awards, entered into a partnership that could lead to the ceremony being televised in future years.
De Abreu tells THR, “Every year, we are very proud to honor excellence in the art of filmmaking in all its disciplines. Michael De Luca is an exemplary representative of that excellence.”
Over the past 10 years, Hollywood Film Awards honorees went on to garner a total of 96 Oscar nominations and 34 Oscars.
