June will be bustin’ out all over for just five more weeks at the Imperial Theatre.
The Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical classic, Carousel, will close Sept. 16, less than six months after its April 12 official opening.
Directed by Jack O’Brien, the production drew mixed-to-positive reviews, with unanimous acclaim for Justin Peck’s athletic choreography and for the superb cast, headlined by Joshua Henry, Jessie Mueller, Renee Fleming, Lindsay Mendez and Alexander Gemignani.
All five of those principals landed Tony nominations for their work this year, with the production scoring 11 noms in total. Carousel took home awards for best featured actress in a musical for Lindsay Mendez’s captivating turn as Carrie Pipperidge, and for Peck’s choreography, representing a thrilling musical-theater debut for the New York City Ballet resident choreographer.
The revival was the first major new Broadway production of the 1945 show in more than 20 years, and while most critics agreed that the vocally accomplished cast delivered an exquisitely sung interpretation, many took issue with O’Brien’s perceived failure to deal with the problematic sexual politics of a dark drama that plays uncomfortably in an age of heightened attention to gender disparity and power dynamics in relationships.
Led by Roy Furman, Scott Rudin and Barry Diller, the large-scale production regularly grossed north of $1 million a week in its early months but more recently has been slipping, last week earning just $675,660. Total box office to date is $23.2 million, which is a respectable figure though unlikely to return the producers’ $15 million capitalization.
