Carrie Coon, the rising star who drew attention in the past year for her work in Gone Girl and HBO’s The Leftovers, will return to the New York stage this season.
She steps into the lead role in the world premiere of Melissa James Gibson‘s comedy Placebo, replacing Kristen Connolly, who was forced to leave the production due to a conflicting obligation.
Coon will play a pharmacologist working on a controlled lab study of a new female arousal drug when her professional and personal lives begin to collide. The play also stars William Jackson Harper, Alex Hurt and Florencia Lozano.

In addition to her playwriting credits, Gibson is a writer and story editor on FX’s The Americans and Netflix’s House of Cards.
Directed by Daniel Aukin, Placebo begins previews on Feb. 20 at Playwrights Horizons, with an official opening on March 16. The limited engagement runs through April 5.
Coon’s last New York stage appearance earned her a Tony Award nomination for the role of Honey in the 2012 revival of Edward Albee‘s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? That Steppenwolf Theatre production won Tonys for best revival, director Pam MacKinnon and lead actor Tracy Letts, who is married to Coon.
