Catherine Keener has joined the cast of Unless, Irish director Alan Gilsenan‘s movie adaptation of late Canadian novelist Carol Shields‘ final book.
The Oscar nominee plays a writer whose oldest daughter (Hannah Gross) drops out of college and lands on a Toronto street corner panhandling and speechless. Keener recently starred in another Canadian indie film, Elephant Song, a big-screen adaptation of the play by Nicolas Billon by Canadian director Charles Biname that had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
The Capote star joins an Unless cast that includes Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle, Matt Craven, Chloe Rose and German actress Hanna Schygulla. The Canada-Irish co-production, shooting in Toronto, was originally developed by Irish producer Subotica, before Canadian partner Sienna Films came on board.
Jennifer Kawaja, Julia Sereny, Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan share the producer credits. Toronto-based Mongrel Media is handling International sales for Unless.
