Cathriona White, the on-again off-again girlfriend of actor Jim Carrey who died in a suspected suicide last week, was married to another man at the time of her death, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
According to an official with the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s office, White’s body will be released to her husband for repatriation to her native Ireland.
“She had a husband, we have a husband as next of kin,” said the Medical Examiner’s official, “We’re not releasing any more information on next of kin, but we do have her as married.”
The news was confirmed by a second well-placed source close to Carrey who said that White was indeed married but separated from her husband and was planning on filing divorce proceedings sometime in December.
“There is no way that Jim would have taken her out to public places if he thought she was married,” said a well-placed source close to Carrey’s family, “As far as Jim was concerned, Cat was separated from her husband and was going to start divorce proceedings in December. When people are separated they date or do whatever they need to do.”
The identity of White’s husband remains unclear, as is the length of their marriage, where they got married and when they separated. In the wake of White’s death, a reportedly devastated Carrey met with members of White’s family, who flew in from Ireland.
The Medical Examiner yesterday concluded the autopsy on White and sent the results of a toxicological exam off for analysis. Results are expected back between 8 and 12 weeks.
“It came in as a suicide but we’re not noting it as such yet until we can confirm what was in her system,” said the Medical Examiner official.
White’s body was discovered last week by friends who went to the house she was renting in Sherman Oaks after not hearing from her for several days. According to the L.A. County Coroner’s office, White was found along with several suicide notes and four different kinds of powerful medication, including Ambien, Percocet, Zofran and Propranolol.
A source close to the family also confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the medication had belonged to Jim Carrey but that White had allegedly taken it from the actor’s Brentwood home without his knowledge or consent.
“They were his medications but unbeknownst to him she took the pills,” said this source, adding that these were medications that the actor did not take regularly. “He had no idea. He didn’t even know they were gone for a few days.”
White, a make-up artist and aspiring actress, was also active in the Church of Scientology and had for the last several months been involved in a low-level form of in-house Church therapy called Survival Rundown.
According to former Scientologists, the therapy can be very destabilizing.
“The purpose of some of those processes are to learn the ability to be controlled and to control others,” says Mark Headley, an ex-Scientologist who says he is familiar with the techniques, “You’re being indoctrinated into how to do this.”
Scientologists frown on the use of psychotropic medications, such as the ones found next to White’s body at the time of her death. And ex-Scientologists say that people with a history of mental health problems, professional psychiatric help or those with a history of prescription drug use would be barred from the Church.
“Generally in Scientology, if anyone has any sort of mental depression or breakdowns, they’re not allowed to do anything in the church,” says Headley, “There is a long history of these people freaking out when they start doing Scientology counseling.”
If White developed mental health issues while in the Church and sought outside counseling, says Headley, “without a doubt, they would have prevented her from getting outside care.”
A source close to Carrey says that he was “unaware” that White was in the Church and that, while they had “a few bumps in their relationship, they were not broken up.”
“When somebody takes a break from somebody and there’s a sudden death, you have to look further than just a break up,” this source says, “Most people don’t end a life just for that. You have to look at other factors.”
