Univision Communications CEO Randy Falco on Thursday made one of his clearest comments to date on the increasing competition in the Spanish-language media space.
“Univision is here to stay and here to win,” he said during his company’s earnings conference call.
New or upcoming Spanish-language TV offerings from the likes of News Corp./Fox and others are “a testament to the value of the work we are doing and have been doing for half a century,” Falco said.
“But we were the early movers and have spent many years as the undisputed leader” in Spanish-language media, and Univision expects to stay on top, he said. “We hold that title now and expect to [do so] long into the future. It is our job to be the best.”
Even with increased competition, Univision’s Univision, Telefutura and Galavision networks together have 73 percent market share among Spanish-language TV viewing adults 18-49 in primetime, the Univision CEO said. “Our brand equity is unparalleled,” Falco said.
First-quarter advertising and financials trends are a “strong foundation for the upcoming selling season,” he said.
The company reported its best radio performance since 2007 for the first quarter and the best TV stations performance since the soccer World Cup in 2010.
