Charlotte Rampling was the Angelina Jolie of her time — gorgeous, feline, brilliant, unique.
She became the face of the sixties when she starred in Georgy Girl, The Knack and Luchino Visconti‘s The Damned. In 1974 she starred opposite Dirk Bogart in the S&M-infused The Night Porter, wearing a lot of leather suspenders, leather caps — and little else. Marc Jacobs based his entire fall 2011 Louis Vuitton collection around that look.
Rampling has continued to work, giving a stand out performance in 2003’s Swimming Pool and appearing in Lars Von Trier‘s Melancholia, but now there’s a film about her.
Charlotte Rampling: The Look, from director Angelina Maccarone and distributed by Kino Lorber, premieres in New York on Nov. 4, with an Los Angeles opening date to be announced within the month.
What makes this a so-called “fashion film” is that, firstly, Rampling’s look has always been iconic — at every age. She’s still gorgeous, and has much wisdom to impart. It also stars fashion photographers Peter Lindbergh and Jurgen Teller, quite famous in their own right, who have both been influenced in fashion magazines by Rampling, and of course, shot her.
Her style is singular: the British sophisticate who lives on the continent. She’s always dressed down, but it’s always perfection. And we’ll get to hear two of our favorite fashion photographers speak about her look.
Brilliant novelist Paul Auster also makes an appearance, which tells you something about Rampling’s intellectual capacity. Fashion isn’t always just about the clothes. It’s a lot about the attitude.
