Chuck alum Zachary Levi is making his Broadway debut with the musical comedy First Date.
He will co-star in the new production opposite stage veteran Krysta Rodriguez, who appeared in NBC’s Smash, as well as The Addams Family and Spring Awakening on Broadway. First Date will begin previews July 9 before officially opening Aug. 8 at the Longacre Theatre.
The show follows tightly wound Aaron (Levi), who is set up with serial-dater Casey (Rodriguez), and a quick drink at a busy New York restaurant suddenly turns into a high-stakes dinner. As the date unfolds in real time, the couple finds that they are not alone; Casey and Aaron’s inner critics take on a life of their own as restaurant patrons and the wait staff get into the act.
The cast includes Sara Chase, Kristoffer Cusick, Blake Hammond and Kate Loprest. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
Austin Winsberg (Gossip Girl) wrote the book, with music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner (Secondhand Lions, Twice Charmed) and musical staging by Josh Rhodes (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella). Bill Berry will direct.
Levi, who next appears in Thor: The Dark World, sang in Disney’s animated film Tangled, performing “I See the Light” alongside co-star Mandy Moore at the 83rd Academy Awards.
He is the second Chuck star to test the waters on Broadway, following Yvonne Strahovski, who debuted late last year to strong reviews in Lincoln Center Theater’s Tony-nominated play revival, Golden Boy.
