“Clash of the Titans,” a remake of the 1981 cult classic, was a titan on the video charts the week ending Aug. 1.
The Warner Home Video title, which earned more than $163 million at the boxoffice, easily topped the national sales, Blu-ray sales and rental charts its first week out.
It also scored the second-highest Blu-ray share of total unit sales for a No. 1 new release this year, at 44%. It was second only to blockbuster “Avatar,” which scored 49% in Blu-ray sales share its first week of release. “Avatar” managed to come in No. 4 on the Blu-ray sales chart, despite being in release since April.
“Clash’s” No. 1 debut on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week also showed its strong rental appeal. Like all Warner new releases, it won’t be available at rental kiosks or through Netflix for another month, and it made the No. 1 spot without availability at those popular rental outlets.
“Clash” also bowed at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, with second-ranked “Batman: Under the Red Hood,” a direct-to-video title also from Warner, bowing a distant No. 2, selling just one-fifth the units. The Batman title also took the second spot on Nielsen’s Blu-ray sales chart for the week.
Another new release, Universal’s sci-fi actioner “Repo Men,” starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker, debuted at No. 3 on all three charts. The previous week’s top title, Warner’s “Cop Out,” took the second spot on the rental chart for the week and landed at No. 4 on the sales chart.
