Less than two weeks after Badfinger’s “Baby Blue” closed out the AMC series Breaking Bad, the catalog of the band’s two songwriters has been moved to Kobalt from BMG Publishing.
Kobalt has signed exclusive deals with the estates of Pete Ham and Tom Evans, the songwriters who penned the bulk of Badfinger’s material. Ham wrote “Baby Blue,” “Day After Day” and “No Matter What”; Evans and Ham collaborated on “Without You,” the hit for Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey.

Interest in Badfinger has been piqued since their 1972 single played over the final scene of Breaking Bad. “Baby Blue” sold 37,000 copies between Sept. 30 and Oct. 6, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It had sold 5,000 downloads the previous week, the vast majority of that in the few hours after the Sept. 29 finale. “Baby Blue” hit No. 14 on the Hot 100 in 1972.
Badfinger recorded for The Beatles’ Apple Corps and worked with the Fab Four, scoring their first hit with Paul McCartney‘s “Come and Get It” for the film starring Ringo Starr, The Magic Christian. The album that featured “Baby Blue,” Straight Up, featured production by George Harrison and Todd Rundgren.
The two songwriters committed suicide; Ham in 1975 and Evans in 1983.
