TORONTO – They played prisoners in Tom Fontana’s HBO urban jail drama Oz.
Now Lee Tergesen and Eamonn Walker are reuniting as guest stars on the second season of BBC America’s Copper, the Civil War crime drama from co-creators Fontana and Will Rokos, and Cineflix Studios.
Tergesen, who played Tobias Beecher in Oz, in Copper will guest as Philomen Keating, an intelligent criminal mastermind in vice-laden 1865 New York City.
And Walker (Chicago Fire) will play the legendary abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass as Manhattan’s notorious Five Points neighborhood has yet to see the end of slavery improve the life of immigrants.
The BBC America original, which has resumed production in Toronto, is also adding Andrew Howard (Hatfields and McCoys, Burn Notice) as James O’Rouke, a physically intimidating, yet shrewd manager of a budding criminal organization.
The latest cast additions come as executive producers Fontana and Barry Levinson look to build on the violent upheaval of the first season.
Copper, which also airs on Showcase in Canada, follows detective Kevin Corcoran, played by Tom Weston-Jones, an Irish-American detective, or copper, returned from the Civil War and looking to uncover the truth about his missing wife and dead daughter in 1865 Manhattan.
The series also stars Kyle Schmid, Anastasia Griffith, Franka Potente and Ato Essandoh.
Also returning for the second season is Kevin Ryan, Dylan Taylor, Kiara Glasco and Tessa Thompson.
Copper is Cineflix Studios’ first scripted drama that was ordered straight to series and became BBC America’s highest-rated series premiere and highest-rated drama series ever.
New series regulars earlier announced for the sophomore season include Donal Logue (Terriers), who will play a Sixth Ward boss and Civil War general Brendan Donovan.
Writer Thomas Kelly (Blue Bloods) has also come on board as an executive producer
And Mike Frislev and Chad Oakes are producing 13 episodes of Copper’s sophomore season, which is shooting in Toronto to July 2013.
The second season of Copper will debut in summer 2013.
BBC America’s second scripted original, Orphan Black, is also shot in Canada.
