Brie Larson won best actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards, but couldn’t attend the Jan. 17 event at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar as she was in Australia filming Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island. Sources say the recent Golden Globe winner asked Room co-star Jacob Tremblay to accept for her, but show producers denied her a proxy, citing protocol of not telling winners in advance and having presenters accept trophies for absentees.

Yet The Revenant‘s Leonardo DiCaprio sent in a taped speech for winning best actor honors, while George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road actress squad (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Abbey Lee, Zoe Kravitz, Courtney Eaton and Riley Keough) picked up his award with prepared comments.
Reps for Larson could not be reached for comment. A source close to the show said the organization is revisiting its policies. Tremblay, age 9, made it to the stage anyway as best young actor and stole the show with a charming speech.
