CTV Becomes First Canadian Broadcaster to Support Google Chromecast

CTV on Thursday became the first Canadian broadcaster to add its TV everywhere app, CTV Go, to Google Chromecast’s streaming stick.

That support means CTV’s top-rated U.S. shows like The Big Bang Theory, Canada’s most-watched TV show, Gotham, Marvels Agent Carter and Person of Interest are now available for streaming by plugging the $39 Google dongle into the back of a TV set. “We’re excited to have CTV as the first Canadian broadcaster available on Chromecast,” said Suveer Kothari, director of Chromecast partnerships at Google.

“With the CTV GO app and Chromecast, Canadians will now be able to use the devices they already own, like phones, tablets and laptops to find and cast their favorite CTV programs to their TV screen with a simple tap,” he added. The Chromecast has already been widely rolled out in the U.S. market after Google added apps for Showtime, Starz, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.

For CTV-parent Bell Media, Google Chromecast ensures its top-rated U.S. and Canadian series get viewed here as the Canadian cable bundle frays as consumers increasingly migrate to Netflix Canada and other emerging online platforms. The move to Chromecast also follows Bell Media in December 2014 launching a new subscription VOD service, CraveTV, to compete with Netflix Canada.
