LONDON – Writer/director Amit Gupta’s comedy Jadoo will be carried into U.K. cinemas by Intandem Films, the stock-listed sales, finance and distribution venture.
Intandem has inked a deal for U.K. distribution to comedy about two estranged brothers in Leicester who run rival Indian curry restaurants but have to work together to cater for one of the daughter’s wedding.
The story comes from Gupta’s own life experience.
The writer/director used to live above the family restaurant, The Chaat House, on the Golden Mile in Leicester’s Little India district. His mother and his aunt still run the restaurant today.
The British banner has also taken on worldwide sales duties to the comedy which stars Amara Karan, Tom Mison, Harish Patel, Kulvinder Ghi and Indian chef and actress Madhur Jaffrey.
The film is now in post and Intandem plans an early 2013 release.
Intandem Film Distribution, the start-up division run by former Buena Vista U.K. chief Robert Mitchell, launches in October this year with a limited targeted release of Stephen Gyllenhaal’s political comedy Grassroots.
Said Mitchell: “Intandem is delighted to have secured the rights to distribute Jadoo in the U.K. We expect the theatrical release to follow the success of other heartwarming comedies in the U.K. such as Billy Elliot, East is East and Bend It Like Beckham, which were all critically acclaimed as well as being hugely successful at the box office, each of them generating in excess of £5 million ($8 million).”
