Cynthia Erivo is expanding into producing.
The award-winning actress is reteaming with The Outsider studio MRC Television and has signed a first-look deal with the studio and Civic Center Media.
Additionally, The Outsider and Genius star has launched Edith’s Daughter, a production company that will focus on stories and people who are often overlooked and underrepresented. Erivo has tapped Bron Studios’ Solome Williams as vp at Edith’s Daughter (with the company named after Erivo’s mother).
“MRC was an incredible partner on The Outsider and I’m unbelievably excited to begin this new creative journey in television with them,” Erivo said. “I could not think of a better partner than my new vice president Solome Williams, who is brilliant and has thoroughly impressed me with her experience and drive. I’m looking forward to building with her.”
Williams comes to the company after serving as director of development at Bron Studios, where she built the studio’s development arm and oversaw film and TV projects including Dream Doll, Falling to Earth and the English remake of French comedy Call My Agent. Before that, Williams spent time at Fox Searchlight, where she worked on films including Wendy, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Favourite.
“Cynthia’s artistry is bar none; and we have been impressed to see first-hand how she brings her creativity to life through storytelling,” MRC Television president Elise Henderson said. “As an artist-first studio, to partner with Edith’s Daughter provides MRC Television a unique opportunity to support not only Cynthia’s vision, but that of the many storytellers she will champion.”
MRC TV and Civic Center most recently teamed on HBO’s The Outsider. Civic Center is a joint venture between UTA and MRC Television that was launched in October 2018 with the goal of developing, producing and financing premium TV series. Civic Center and MRC TV are also behind Hulu’s The Great, Netflix’s Ozark, Amazon’s The Terminal List and Apple’s The Shrink Next Door.
Erivo next has National Geographic’s Genius in which she stars as Aretha Franklin. Her credits include Harriet, Bad Times at the El Royale and Widows. She’s repped by UTA, Authentic Talent and Literary Management and Peikoff Mahan.
MRC Television is a division of MRC, parent company of The Hollywood Reporter.
