Van Nuys will have a presence at Sundance 2013.
Foo Fighters frontman and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl is taking his directorial debut, Sound City, about the San Fernando Valley recording studio where such seminal albums as Nirvana’s Nevermind, Tom Petty‘s Damn the Torpedoes and Weezer’s Pinkerton were made, to the esteemed Park City, Utah, film festival. Select artists from the film will also be in attendance.
Said Grohl in an announcement issued on Monday: “As a first-time director, I am humbled to be able to share my passion for songwriting and storytelling with this incredible cast of legendary musicians, as seen through the extraordinary story of America’s greatest unsung recording studio, Sound City. Being included in this group of artists is a true honor, and the Sundance Film Festival is the perfect place to premiere a film about craft, integrity and passion for art. I am over the moon!”

The idea for the film came to life after Grohl bought the studio’s 1972 recording console, which had been used to lay down tracks by such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns N’ Roses, Fear, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica and many more.
Through interviews conducted with the musicians and producers (among them: Petty, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and Trent Reznor), Grohl the director “explores the human element of music in an age of technology.” Sound City also features performances of new music created exclusively for the film.
Roswell Films, a division of the Roswell Records label that releases Foo Fighters music, will distribute the film.
It was recently announced that Grohl will also host a “Sound City” radio show on SiriusXM.
