Dave Grohl gave a special performance of “Blackbird” during the 88th Academy Awards’ “In Memoriam” tribute on Sunday evening.
The Foo Fighters frontman sat and played the guitar as he sang a heartfelt version of Paul McCartney’s song while images and footage of late entertainment industry veterans — including Alan Rickman, David Bowie and Leonard Nimoy — were shown on the screen.
Grohl’s somber performance was the first time that the former Nirvana drummer has appeared on the Oscar stage.
The Chris Rock-hosted awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
