New York Times columnist David Carr, who died Thursday, had been suffering from lung cancer, according to autopsy results released Saturday.
The autopsy revealed that Carr, 58, died from complications of metastatic small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung, the New York Times reports.

The journalist collapsed in the Times‘ New York City offices Feb. 12 and was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Earlier that day, he had moderated a Citizenfour panel with director Laura Poitras and subject Edward Snowden.
Carr, who had written openly of his previous battles with drug addiction, was a survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He wrote the Media Equation column for the publication and was “the finest media reporter of his generation,” according to Times executive editor Dean Baquet.
