As part of the cast of Wizards of Waverly Place, David Henrie knows a little about the power of magic — but his new project Cloaks will showcase a far darker magic than anything he got to explore on the fan-favorite Disney series.
Cloaks is a four-issue limited series created by Henrie for Boom! Studios that centers on an illusionist and con artist forced to join a “clandestine black-ops organization” in order to maintain his freedom after being caught stealing from Wall Street bankers in an attempt to become a modern-day Robin Hood.

“I have always been a fan of, and admired, stories taking place in the behind-the-scenes world of the government,” Henrie told THR about the origins of the story, adding that he also loves “heroes that have a deep dark past [because] it creates secrets to discover and a very textured character with demons to tackle and lots of room to grow.”

Henrie’s idea is being brought to life by writer Caleb Monroe and artist Mariano Navarro, an experience he describes as “like seeing a dream for the first time on paper.” Comics, he explained, is the ideal medium for the story because the format “engages the reader in a way where he’s forced to use his imagination and participate along the read, and that natural journey the reader goes on is perfect for our world because our hero is a magician turned spy. The reader will be solving riddles and connecting plot points along the way with our hero.”
The series launches in September in comic-book stores and digitally, and will soon be available for pre-order. Right now, however, you can see a preview of the opening pages below, as well as the cover of the first issue, by W. Scott Forbes and Phil Noto (art not final).
