Having won a Tony Award in 2007 for best actor in a musical for Curtains, David Hyde Pierce will try his hand at directing one on Broadway in the spring, with the new musical comedy It Shoulda Been You.
Described as a “modern spin on the traditional wedding comedy,” the show unfolds during the chaotic preparations for the nuptials of a Jewish bride and a Catholic groom, with Broadway veterans Tyne Daly and Harriet Harris as their respective mothers, locked in a culture-clash collision.
The show premiered to sellout houses and mixed reviews in 2011 at the George Street Playhouse in New Jersey. It features an original score by Barbara Anselmi, with book and lyrics by Pierce’s husband, Brian Hargrove, a TV writer whose credits include Titus and Caroline in the City.
The Broadway production begins previews March 17 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, with opening night set for April 14.
The show’s bride and groom will be played by Sierra Boggess, who appeared with Daly in Master Class, and David Burtka, who was last on Broadway in the 2003 revival of Gypsy and is married to Neil Patrick Harris.
In addition to Harriet Harris, the cast also features Edward Hibbert, another of Pierce’s former Frasier co-stars. Rounding out the ensemble are Lisa Howard and Steve Rosen.
Lead producers on the Broadway transfer are Daryl Roth, Scott Landis, Jane Bergere, Jayne Baron Sherman and John O’Boyle.
