Stephen Lovekin/Getty ImagesNEW YORK — David Strathairn will return to Broadway in the fall to star opposite Jessica Chastain in The Heiress, the 1947 adaptation by Ruth and Augustus Goetz of the 1880 Henry James novel, Washington Square.
Moisés Kaufman (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo) will direct the revival, which marks the first foray into Broadway producing for film veteran Paula Wagner. Her fellow lead producers on the project are Roy Furman and Stephanie P. McClelland.
Strathairn will play Dr. Austin Sloper, the wealthy father of Chastain’s character, Catherine Sloper, a plain, socially awkward young woman from whom he withholds affection, blocking what she believes is her one chance at happiness.
Strathairn won an Emmy Award in 2010 for his work in the HBO film Temple Grandin and was nominated for an Oscar as best actor in 2006 for George Clooney‘s Good Night, and Good Luck. His last Broadway appearance was opposite Al Pacino, Marisa Tomei and Dianne Wiest in the 2003 production of Salome.
Next up, the actor will appear in another HBO film, Hemingway & Gellhorn, and on screen later this year in Steven Spielberg‘s historical drama, Lincoln. Strathairn also will reprise his recurring role from Universal’s Bourne series in the upcoming The Bourne Legacy, due in August.
Dates, theater and additional cast for The Heiress are to be announced.
