Looks like Dead Accounts is officially dead in the water.
The Theresa Rebeck play starring Katie Holmes and Norbert Leo Butz will close on Sunday, Jan. 6, according to an announcement by the show’s producers. The limited engagement was originally scheduled to close seven weeks later, on Feb. 24, but disappointing box office prompted producers to pull the plug early after houses dipped well below 50% capacity in recent weeks.
The show will have performed 27 previews and 44 regular performances at the Music Box Theatre by the time it closes.
The comedy, directed by Jack O’Brien, tells the story of “a brother, a sister, and a surprise reunion that turns their family upside down,” according to the play’s official website.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s David Rooney wrote in his review, “Directed with a nimble hand by Jack O’Brien, the Broadway production assembles a terrific five-person cast. Two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz is in typically wired, Energizer Bunny form, with Holmes ably playing foil.”
He continued, “The play, however, suffers from the same shortcomings that often cramp the theater work of Rebeck… Dead Accounts is all surface polish and minimal depth. It has lively dialogue, well-drawn characters and a smattering of smart observations about contemporary life. But it never acquires thematic coherence.”
The play also co-stars Judy Greer, Jayne Houdyshell and Josh Hamilton.
Holmes will be seen on the big screen next year in Christian Camargo‘s as-yet-untitled drama, co-starring Jean Reno, Allison Janney and William Hurt. Next up for Butz is the musical adaptation of the Tim Burton film Big Fish, which tries out in Chicago in the spring and is expected to segue to Broadway in the 2013-14 season.
