Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios has greenlighted We Real Cool, an urban action comedy from Dear White People producer Effie T. Brown.
AGC will finance and co-produce the film, which Brown and Leah Natasha Thomas (America Divided) will produce. AGC’s Ford, Greg Shapiro and Glendon Palmer will executive produce.
We Real Cool will mark the feature debut of Melissa V. Murray, a graduate of the Ghetto Film School and a Sundance Ignite Fellow alum, who will direct from her own script. We Real Cool is currently casting and is set to begin production early next year.
We Real Cool follows a trio of college-bound Harlem-native women — Summer, Jordan and Aurora — who get more than they bargained for when they attend a dicey party in Brooklyn. After being falsely implicated in a murder and with every neighborhood goon looking to cash in on the bounty on their heads, the three — with no phones, no money and no functioning public transport in sight — have to battle their way out of the neighborhood and get back home.
“So many people talk a good game about inclusion and hiring women but rarely do they really follow through,” said Brown in a statement. “Stuart Ford and AGC did just that. In fact he doubled down — not only are they giving a talented first time queer black female director her break by financing her film, but AGC are also committed to leveling the Hollywood playing filed by supporting an all-black female producing team. This is how you make meaningful change in the industry. We can’t wait to get started.”
AGC recently announced two other urban female-focused features, backing The Perfect Find, a romantic comedy based on the best-selling book by Tia Williams, which will star Gabrielle Union (Bring It On), and picking up the life rights to the life story of Wall Street trailblazer Lauren Simmons as a vehicle for Dope star Kiersey Clemons.
ICM and AGC’s Palmer brokered the deal for We Real Cool, which was negotiated by AGC’s vp legal and business affairs Anant Tamirisa on behalf of AGC, by Darrell Miller of Fox Rothschild on behalf of Effie Brown and by First Friday Entertainment and Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger.
