Denmark has picked A War, the latest drama from fast-rising director Tobias Lindholm (A Hijacking, R), to be its submission for the Oscar for best foreign-language film.
Lindholm’s frequent collaborator, Borgen‘s Pilou Asbaek, stars as a Danish army commander whose split-second decision on the battlefield has wide-reaching consequences on his and his family’s lives back home.
A War beat out Anders Thomas Jensen‘s dramedy Men & Chicken and Joshua Oppenheimer‘s documentary The Look of Silence, which had also made Denmark’s Oscar contender shortlist.
In addition to his films as a director, Lindholm co-wrote the screenplay to Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, which was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign-language film last year.
In recent years, Denmark has been one of the most successful countries at the Oscars, with three nominations and one win — for Susanne Bier‘s In a Better World in 2011 — in the past five years.
