“People are always saying, ‘I don’t care if I win. It’s just an honor to be nominated.’ That’s really true,” Derek Waters, of the Emmy-nominated Drunk History, told The Hollywood Reporter. The Comedy Central series received a nomination for outstanding variety sketch series for the fourth consecutive year.
“Somebody fooled another person and somehow, I’m still here,” he joked.
Drunk History is in good company with its category, which includes Sarah Silverman’s Hulu show I Love You, America and NBC’s Saturday Night Live. “It’s just like, ‘You’re considering us to be in the same category as those guys? That’s so cool.’ I’m so, so lucky,” said Waters.
“It’s my favorite group. I wish we all hung out,” he added.
Drunk History recently wrapped up its fifth season on Comedy Central, which featured breakout star Tiffany Haddish in the season premiere episode “Heroines.” Waters told THR why he was most excited for her storytelling: “She’s always been Tiffany Haddish, but she was just on the brink of hitting it and I just had so much fun with her.”
He continued: “We met once before and I just couldn’t stop smiling, and those are the types of people that I just love having tell stories because I feel like in this show, or any kind of documentary-type world, when somebody’s telling you something that they believe in and love, whether you believe in it or not, you just can’t help but smile and be intrigued by their passion.”
Added Waters: “That’s what I’ve always wanted the show to stay true to, is just passionate people talking about something they’re passionate about.”
