Devin Faraci Parts Ways With Drafthouse a Second Time After Backlash

Devin Faraci is out for a second time at the Alamo Drafthouse after CEO Tim League bowed to public and internal pressure to terminate contact with the controversial film blogger. 

League posted a short letter on Facebook on Wednesday evening that said Faraci had offered his resignation, which was duly accepted. League added that he was happy and willing to talk to people about the controversy in small group discussions beginning on Friday. 

The editor of Drafthouse’s Births.Movies.Deaths. website Meredith Borders quickly followed with a statement reiterating that Faraci “has not worked in any capacity for Birth.Movies.Death. — not the website, the magazine or the management of the department.”

Drafthouse, and League in particular, has faced a wave of public hostility after it was revealed that the company had quietly rehired Faraci as a copywriter 10 months after being accused of sexual assault. That accusation led to Faraci’s initial resignation as editor of Birth.Movies.Deaths. League had to temper criticism by saying he was offering Faraci a “second chance,” and that the notorious blogger had been dealing with his addictions and was on the path to recovery. 

Faraci’s rehiring led to a swift public backlash and calls for a boycott on Twitter and Facebook. Internally, Drafthouse lost the lead programmer to Fantastic Fest, its popular sci-fi and horror festival, who resigned in protest to the rehire. In his resignation statement, Todd Brown said that he had “no advance knowledge of this decision nor knowledge that Devin was contributing to the program guide.” 

Tim League’s full letter: 

Hello everyone, 

I would like you each to know that I have spoken with Devin today, and we agreed it is the right decision for him to leave the company permanently. He offered his resignation, and I have accepted it. 

Our company values the ability to reflect on our own actions both individually and as a team. I have reflected a great deal, and I welcome the opportunity to speak with each of you, to listen and to provide the opportunity for further reflection. 

As a result, you will all be receiving an invitation to a series of small group discussions beginning Friday. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me personally with any concerns as we together chart our path forward.

Yesterday, Tim League, owner of the Alamo Drafthouse, released a statement that our former Editor-in-Chief Devin Faraci has been copywriting for the Alamo after stepping down from Birth.Movies.Death. A number of fans were understandably upset by this information, and tonight Tim announced that Devin has officially parted ways from the company for good.

I want to be clear: since Devin’s letter of resignation, he has not worked in any capacity for Birth.Movies.Death.—not the website, the magazine or the management of the department.
