In a move that could lead to another televised awards show, Dick Clark Productions is investing in the Hollywood Film Awards. The event’s founder and director Carlos de Abreu says the investment will allow the annual star-studded event to grow “bigger and better.”
For now, de Abreu says there is no plan to create a television show around the Hollywood Film Awards, which will present its 17th annual program on Oct. 21 in Beverly Hills — just as the Hollywood awards season kicks into high gear. But Dick Clark Productions is known for producing many televised awards shows, including NBC’s Golden Globe Awards and ABC’s American Music Awards.
“Carlos will continue to produce the show as he always has with the support of Dick Clark Productions’ team,” says Mike Mahan, president of Dick Clark Media. “We’re going to do everything we can to assist with the infrastructure, with talent and in every other way.”
As for television aspirations, Mahan adds, “this is an unbelievable event with A-plus list talent. It has really become an important show with respect to kicking off the awards season, and while we have no plans to do TV this year, it’s certainly something we are going to consider for the future.”
De Abreu launched the event as part of the Hollywood Film Festival, which he founded in 1997. Falling in late October, the Hollywood Film Awards have served as one of the first venues for studios to position films and talent as awards contenders. The honors, which are announced in advance of the ceremony, include career achievement, top actor and actress, a director’s award, a breakthrough performance award and more.
Honorees in 2012 included Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck, Quentin Tarantino, Robert De Niro, John Goodman, Richard Gere, Dustin Hoffman, Judd Apatow and Amy Adams. Many of them went on the receive Globe and Oscar nominations.
De Abreu says he hopes the Hollywood Film Awards will find a home on television.
“Its an aspiration of everybody who builds a live event, to have it televised,” he says. “I would love eventually for our new partner, if they elect to do so, to go for it. My goal is to have the Hollywood Film Awards move to the next level.”
Mahan would not disclose the amount of the investment in the event but he says it is not a sponsorship deal. “We’re not looking to promote [Dick Clark Productions] in any way,” he says. “We’re looking to co-produce a show.”
De Abreu says he has been approached before about various partnerships but he believes Dick Clark executives are the “right partners.”
“They have the team not only to produce the show but to continue it in the future as a way to honor cinema and launch the awards season,” he says. “They are putting in time, energy and resources that will make it bigger and better.”
