Diego Luna is in talks to star opposite Ellen Page in the remake of 1990 sci-fi thriller Flatliners, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Niels Arden Oplev, director of the original Swedish film Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, will helm the new Flatliners from a screenplay by Source Code scribe Ben Ripley, with David Blackman and Laurence Mark as producers.
Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon starred in the original, in which medical students discover how to journey into the afterworld and then resurrect themselves. As often happens when anyone attempts to cheat death, things begin to go amiss.
The negotiations for a lead role in Flatliners follows Luna starring in Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars stand-alone Rogue One, the Gareth Edwards-directed film about resistance fighters who unite to steal plans to the Death Star.
Luna and his partners Pablo Cruz and Eric Bonniot (A Band Apart) recently launched a branded entertainment studio, Gloria. Luna and Cruz, along with Gael Garcia Bernal, are also co-founders of the Mexican production and distribution company Canana.
News of Luna in talks to star in Flatliners first appeared in TheWrap.
