Ahead of a presentation by Dinesh D’Souza at the 2014 Republican Leadership Conference on Saturday night where the conservative author plans to reveal a portion of his upcoming film, America, The Hollywood Reporter has obtained the opening sequence of the movie.
Lionsgate is releasing America, D’Souza’s follow-up to his hit documentary 2016: Obama’s America, wide on July 2. Video of the first two minutes of the film is embedded below.
America is based on D’Souza’s upcoming book with the same title, in which he attempts to dismantle what he says are arguments the political left makes to unfairly disparage the U.S.
“I’ll be showing 10 minutes. It’s Act 1, before we go into the critique of America,” D’Souza told THR. “It’s longer than a clip because I wanted to show the quality of the cinematography and some of the arguments we present in the film.”
D’Souza, who has written several best-selling books, said he became a filmmaker to engage the left on its own turf.
“The left is winning the cultural war,” he said. “Republicans treat politics as a hobby while the left engages more in academia, culture and the media. Conservatives have been politically outmatched because they’re not fighting on their natural battlefield. I want to step back from the narrow political debate and take a 25,000-foot view of the culture.”
The Republican Leadership Conference event kicked off Thursday in New Orleans and includes such speakers as Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz, former Sen. Rick Santorum, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry. On opening night, former GOP vp candidate Sarah Palin introduced controversial Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson, who called abortion a “blight” on society and warned that the U.S. would be lost “if we don’t turn to God at a pretty rapid clip.”
