Discovery Communications boss David Zaslav made $49.9 million in 2012, slightly below the $52.4 million that he had earned in 2011. But that was enough to see him yet again rank just behind Moonves in terms of compensation for bosses of big entertainment companies. The year-over-year drop was due to changes in the value of his stock options, even as the company’s shares rose more than 50 percent last year.

Time Warner Cable and Discovery Communications on Monday announced the early renewal of their carriage agreement, which will allow the cable giant and partner Bright House Networks to continue offering Discovery’s networks, including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science, OWN, Hub Network and others.
The parties “also expect Time Warner Cable customers to enjoy authenticated access to Discovery content in the near future,” meaning the deal includes TV Everywhere rights, the partners said. Financial and other details of the agreement weren’t disclosed.
Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav earlier this year said that his firm has generally not given TV Everywhere rights to pay TV companies in past deals. “We need to get more value for that,” he said.
“We’re pleased to have reached this long-term agreement with Discovery well in advance of our deadline,” said Andrew Rosenberg, senior vp content acquisition for Time Warner Cable. “Our customers will continue to enjoy Discovery’s networks in addition to a robust VOD experience, and we look forward to continually working with Discovery to provide more expansive out-of-home access to their content.”
“Ensuring viewers’ access to and enjoyment of Discovery’s unparalleled family of networks is our top priority, and we are thrilled to have reached this agreement with Time Warner Cable,” said Eric Phillips, president of domestic distribution for Discovery Communications.
He added: “For nearly 30 years, Discovery has remained steadfastly committed to investing in and producing the highest-quality, original content to help viewers satisfy their curiosity about the world around them. This agreement reaffirms Time Warner Cable’s support of that commitment, and we look forward to building value for Time Warner Cable’s lineup and its customers for years to come.”
