Eileen O’Neill is moving up at Discovery Communications, leaving her post as head of Discovery Channel and moving in to the newly created role of Global Group President, Discovery Studios. The expanded role will have her overseeing all creative talent at the studio and managing all of its in-house production units.
“One of the key pillars of Discovery’s success over the past eight years has been our significant investment in world-class content across all screens, and part of that strategy has focused on strengthening our in-house studio capabilities, acquiring more IP across new genres and formats, and bringing some of the world’s top production houses into our company,” said Discovery Communications president and CEO David Zaslav. “Eileen is one of the very best we have at Discovery. In this new role, she will accelerate the growth, output and development of our production engines, and oversee the strategy and investment in new programming, new content creators, new categories and new technologies.”

O’Neill’s oversight at the flagship network will be temporarily taken over by Marjorie Kaplan. The group president of TLC and Animal Planet networks, a 15-year-veteran of the company, has been named interim head. As for a permanent replacement, the company is already looking.
O’Neill will report to Discovery Studios Group’s Bruce Campbell — who will continue his oversight of the operation in his recently expanded role as chief development and digital media officer and general counsel for Discovery. All of the changes are part of Discovery’s ongoing effort to broaden internal production and create content for its global suite of networks.
The move means that O’Neill will also sit on the board of directors at All3Media, once the acquisition is complete.
