Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea will get a $4.5 billion expansion and upgrade, operator Oriental Land announced late in the week in a 10-year plan. The company operates the attractions with a license from the Walt Disney Co.
Among other changes, Tokyo Disneyland’s Fantasyland will double in size and be renovated. Transport and restaurants will also get improvements.
Nikkei Asian Review reported that the company is also planning a Frozen-themed attraction, which could consist of the castle featured in the animated film and ways for visitors to experience scenes from the movie, but the firm’s press release didn’t mention any Frozen plans. The report said it wasn’t clear if the attraction would be part of Tokyo Disneyland or DisneySea.

The Tokyo theme parks drew more than 30 million visitors in 2013. Tokyo Disneyland was the first Disney park to be built outside the U.S. and opened in 1983. Known as the “Kingdom of Magic and Dreams” to its Japanese guests, Tokyo Disneyland was modeled after the original Disneyland Park. Tokyo DisneySea opened in 2001.
“Oriental Land’s aim for the two Disney theme parks is for them to continue to be places where guests will have unforgettable experiences that are unlike anywhere else in the world,” the company said. “Oriental Land will strive to make this a reality through the [mentioned] investments to maximize the value of the theme parks.”
