It’s not often a U.S. senator weighs in on the pre-Oscar documentary race, but California’s Sen. Barbara Boxer seemed enthusiastic about The Invisible War on Nov. 8 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
“The trailer is so captivating, can you imagine the whole film?” said the senator after the clip for the Sundance Documentary Audience Award winner played for a lunch crowd celebrating the movie’s DVD release that included Marcia Gay Harden, Frances Fisher, Laurie David, Maria Cuomo Cole, Jamie McGurk and director Kirby Dick.
FILM REVIEW: The Invisible War
The documentary focuses on rape in the military and Boxer said the film “has already begun to effect significant change” in policy and has been used in training. She added that a former member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told her “the film had given him more insight into rape in the military than 40 years of reports.”
At the same luncheon it was announced that the Artemis Invisible War Recovery Program, a pilot program to treat survivors of military sexual trauma, had raised $500,000 to start funding the project.
