LONDON – Picturehouse Entertainment, the U.K. distribution arm of boutique theater operator Picturehouse Cinemas currently being acquired by Cineworld, is teaming with BBC Worldwide to roll out the special 50th anniversary episode of cult TV show Doctor Who in 3D to theaters across the U.K. on Nov. 23.
The theatrical rollout will hit the big screen simultaneously with the show’s broadcast on BBC One.
In addition to current Doctor star Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, the one-off 75-minute special, entitled “The Day of the Doctor,” stars former Time Lord David Tennant as well as Billie Piper and John Hurt.
In this special event to celebrate the iconic British drama series, thousands of fans are expected to attend screenings of the Doctor’s 50th anniversary at movie houses around the U.K. to see the episode and specially shot introductions for theatrical audiences.
Marc Allenby, head of commercial development at Picturehouse said: “We are thrilled to be working with the BBC and helping them bring their iconic series to cinema screens across the country. Doctor Who is a British television phenomenon, and it is fitting that fans will be able to enjoy the special anniversary episode through the shared experience of watching it on the big screen and in glorious 3D.”
