A 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit Southern California Friday night, shaking Los Angeles and its surrounding areas.
The earthquake hit at 9:09 p.m. PT one mile away from La Habra, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There have been at least 30 aftershocks since, with two of the aftershocks having a magnitude greater than 3.0, according to a press briefing from the USGS. A 3.6 earthquake hit roughly an hour earlier in the same area. La Habra is located about 20 miles southeast of L.A.

As of 10:30 p.m., roughly 2,000 Southern California Edison customers were without power as a result of the quake, but damage was minimal in L.A.
“No significant damage has been reported at this time,” the Los Angeles Fire Department wrote in a blog post. Shortly before 11 p.m., the LAFD said it was no longer in earthquake mode.
L.A.-area news networks cut in to cover the earthquake live, with NBC4 showing live images from La Habra, while ABC7 checked in on LAX, where officials said things were running smoothly. The network reported the quake was felt as far south as Mission Valley in San Diego. Twitter lit up with comments about the quake, with some on social media reporting Disneyland rides had been halted.
The quake was also felt at Dodger Stadium, as the Dodgers hosted cross-town rivals the L.A. Angels. (Video below.)
This is the second notable earthquake to shake L.A. this month. On March 17, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit L.A., with the quake centered 5.6 miles north-northwest of Westwood. Friday night’s quake was was roughly 10 times larger in energy released than the March 17 quake.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted the quake was a reminder of the need for earthquake preparedness. As the World Turns alum Alexandra Chando tweeted she was in a screening of Noah, and wondered if the shaking was a special effect. Below find a sampling of the social media reaction.
