Elizabeth Banks did her best Donald Trump impression on Tuesday night when she took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.
Sauntering out to Queen’s “We Are the Champions” amid a fog machine, she told the crowd after impersonating the GOP nominee’s Republican National Convention entrance: “I don’t usually say this about Donald Trump, but that was over the top.”
Banks added: “The Trump campaign is so hard up for money, I just bought that fog machine on eBay for 30 bucks — I don’t feel good about it.”
The actress, who is serving as the night’s host, then rallied the convention crowd.
“Who is ready to elect Hillary Clinton the next President of the United States?!”
Banks launched into several jokes, comparing Trump’s appearances during last week’s Republican convention to her Hunger Games character, Effie Trinket.
“[She’s] a cruel, out-of-touch reality TV star who wears insane wigs while delivering longwinded speeches to a violent dystopia,” said the actress. “So when I tuned into Cleveland last week I was like, ‘Uh, hey, that’s my act!'”
She then added: “Hillary Clinton rocks my world.”
Though Banks’ opening remarks appeared to fall flat inside the room — delegates barely laughed or clapped — her transitions were better received as the night went on.
Later in the night, she brought up her other memorable role in the Pitch Perfect series.
“I directed Pitch Perfect 2 in which the Barden Bellas went to the world acapella championships, so I know a thing or two about world affairs,” she said to laughs. “But I still have a long way to go to catch Hillary.”
Banks joined Tuesday night’s star-studded lineup of speakers, which included headliner and former President Bill Clinton, as well as Lena Dunham and America Ferrera, Tony Goldwyn and Meryl Streep.
Hillary Clinton made history earlier on Tuesday when she won the Democratic nomination and became the first female major-party nominee.
To conclude the night, Hillary Clinton appeared via video message where she broke through “the glass ceiling” of a montage of past presidents. She thanked her supporters and told all of the young girls watching at home: “One of you is next.”
The second night of the four-day convention also saw speeches from the Mothers of the Movement, which included the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and other African-Americans whose deaths have fueled the Black Lives Matter movement.
