SYDNEY — Ellen DeGeneres will take her talk show to Australia in March, she announced to her live audience alongside Golden Globe nominee Nicole Kidman at Thursday’s taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Australian media reported on Friday.
The show will film segments down under, but it wasn’t immediately clear how many episodes of the talk show would use them.
Taking a page from Oprah Winfrey’s playbook of 2010, the talk show queen announced that all of her audience members would be receiving free airfares and accommodations for a trip to Australia.
Supported by Aussie vitamin company Swisse, which is launching in the U.S., and airline Qantas, DeGeneres is making the trip to Melbourne, hometown of wife Portia de Rossi, and Sydney, arriving in the country March 15.
DeGeneres made the announcement to her 400-strong audience at the taping of Friday’s show on Thursday evening.
“I am partnering with Swisse ,and I love it because they’re an Australian company and they want to help me get to Australia,” DeGeneres told the audience, according to news web site news.com.au “So, I am actually, for the first time in my life, going to Australia. I’m going in March, and I’m going to shoot a bunch of stuff in Melbourne and Sydney. We’re going to do tape pieces and meet the fans and hang out.”
It is unclear at this stage if the trip is being supported by Tourism Australia. Australian companies and Tourism Australia outlaid around $12 million to bring Winfrey and her audience down under in Dec. 2010 to film four episodes of her eponymously titled show.
The Ellen announcement came during the Australian G’Day USA tourism trade mission, which takes place each January across the U.S. Swisse announced Kidman as its new global brand ambassador there.
