BERLIN – Jane Fry, a long-term executive with Endemol South Africa has taken over as managing director of the new South Africa division of completion guarantee giant Film Finances Inc.
Fry will be based in Johannesburg and oversee Film Finances SA’s bonding activity as well as offering prospective producers advance funding against South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry rebate, worth 20 – 25 percent of a visiting film’s local spend.
Film Finances SA is currently bonding Chappie, the new sci-fi film from Elysium helmer Neill Blomkamp, currently in pre-production in Johannesburg. Other upcoming projects include The Giver, starring Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges, and TV series SAF3 from Baywatch writer-producer Greg Bonann, both of which plan to shoot in Cape Town.
Before setting up its South Africa office, Film Finances bonded locally-made projects such as Toronto Festival entry Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom starring Idris Elba, Blomkamp’s District 9 and local animated features Khumba and Zambezia.
“We are very enthusiastic about the future of the South African film industry,” said Film Finances Inc. co-CEO Kurt Woolner. “South Africa has been an appealing shooting location for some time because of its well-developed infrastructure and government support. This, coupled with the rapidly developing local film industry, made it an easy decision for us to open a fully-integrated Film Finances office.”
Fry said she was looking forward to supporting and encouraging “foreign projects to use South Africa as a top destination as well as servicing and supporting the growing local industry with what we do.”
Before joining Film Finances, Fry spent 15 years at Endemol South Africa, most recently as finance director for the indie production giant.
L.A.-based Film Finances Inc. is the world’s largest completion guarantee firm, working on more than 250 productions annually. In addition to its US base, the company has headquarters in the U.K., Canada, Japan, Australia, Germany and Scandinavia and now South Africa.
