Ethan Hawke, Laurie Metcalf Join Lincoln Center Theater Season Lineup

NEW YORK — Ethan Hawke will venture into the thicket of power and madness in William Shakespeare‘s Scottish play when he takes on the title role this fall in a new Broadway staging of Macbeth.

Part of the Lincoln Center Theater season lineup, announced on Thursday, that production will begin previews Oct. 24 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, with opening night set for Nov. 21. 

Currently on movie screens in The Purge and Before Midnight, Hawke will reteam with Tony-winning director Jack O’Brien on Macbeth. They worked together previously on Broadway in Tom Stoppard‘s three-part Russian epic The Coast of Utopia and Shakespeare’s Henry IV, both produced by LCT.

The production marks the third Broadway revival in the past five years of Shakespeare’s bloodiest tragedy, following a 2008 staging led by Patrick Stewart, and a current one-man reinterpretation starring Alan Cumming.

Also on the roster for LCT this season is the world premiere of Domesticated, a new play about politics and gender by Bruce Norris, who won a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Clybourne Park. Laurie Metcalf, a lead actress Tony nominee this year for her work in The Other Place, will lead the cast of the Norris play. Tony-winner Anna D. Shapiro (August: Osage County) will direct.

That production begins previews Oct. 10 for a Nov. 4 opening on LCT’s main Off Broadway stage, the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater.

Following Macbeth into the Beaumont will be a Broadway presentation of Moss Hart‘s classic theater autobiography Act One, adapted and directed by James Lapine. That show begins performances March 20 for an April 17 opening. One of the most beloved chronicles of the golden age of Broadway, Hart’s best-selling 1959 book traces the playwright-director’s path from his impoverished origins to his collaboration with George S. Kaufman on some of the most enduring American stage comedies of the 20th century.

LCT also will present Anthony Giardina‘s play The City of Conversation Off Broadway in the Newhouse, with previews starting April 10 for a May 5 official opening. Directed by Tony-winner Doug Hughes (Doubt), the play centers on Hester Ferris, a fictional behind-the-scenes player in D.C. politics whose influence spans from the end of the Carter administration to the dawn of the Obama age.
