Universal PicturesThis year’s Deauville Film Festival will open with disaster epic Everest, organizers announced on Monday. The film festival, which opens on Sept. 4 in the north of France, will close with cartel thriller Sicario 10 days later.
The highly anticipated Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormakur (2 Guns, Contraband) with an all-star cast of Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley and Jake Gyllenhaal. The story follows the true events of the deadly 1996 expedition.
The film will open the festival following its world premiere at Venice on Sept. 2. Cast and crew are expected to attend the screening in Deauville before the film opens on IMAX on Sept. 18 and wide in the U.S. and France on Sept. 25.
Sicario, which bowed in Cannes, will close the festival just a few days before its U.S. premiere on Sept. 18. The drug drama stars Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Brolin.
The film festival, which is sandwiched between Venice and Toronto, still boasts a Hollywood-heavy guest list and is expected to announce its juries and lineup in the coming days. Past attendees have included Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Michael Douglas and Brian Grazer.
This year’s festival runs Sept. 4-13.
